Second instrument for piano students is optional in estonia because it is expensive and usually not recommended :D

In general I think that playing many instruments in mor beneficial than negative. It is very popular in jazz circle. Their bass layout is standard. Buttons are colored probably for edcational use.

These are old russian bayan's. There are many on ebay, some have even registers and convertor free bass system. They may sound very nice if they are in good condition. Also their quality depends on maker, many factories produced them, most famous are Tyla ones.

I probably should have been mention that chord-scale method is newer than jazz improvisation. At dixieland era they probably just tested and played what sounded good and probably used guide tones method. Simply play only chord tones or pentatonic scale with some blue notest and it sounds quite good....

Innovation is mentioned in probably on most of makers websites, but yes old boxes have quite unique sound. Maybe makers try to innovate on production quantity not in quality?
