Re: Accordions on TV

I'll have to check that on catch-up! Do you know what the piece was i.e. who the composer?

Re: PA Skype Teacher Recommendations

I think Rancoman is suggesting that more experienced players on the forum team up with the beginners to give them a few tips and encouragement. Is that the idea? That should be a separate thread, I think. Sprockets was asking for a teacher, and I feel that there is quite a difference between an exp...

Re: comping

Wikipedia has a very useful page on the Stradella bass, including a 120-bass chart that shows you which notes are in each chord. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stradella_bass_system I made a version that shows only the 78 basses on my Pigini, laminated it and keep it permanently on the music stand. V...

Re: PA Skype Teacher Recommendations

Glad to see the positive reviews of Karen Tweed's Skype lessons. I'm a huge fan of her playing. She is absurdly good. While I've long pondered taking lessons from her, the prospect does seem a bit intimidating. Did any of you who have taken from her feel that way at first? Tweed is generally hugely...

Re: piano to accordion

I would think anyone who already plays one instrument reasonably competently is going to learn the accordion much more quickly than someone who is totally new to playing music. The piano is generally a brilliant grounding, and the fact that you have to play different lines on left and right hand at ...

Re: PA Skype Teacher Recommendations

I've been having occasional Skype lessons with Karen Tweed which have helped me no end. Highly recommend! I'd second this recommendation - especially if you want to learn to play with expression, variation and vivacity. I've learnt more from Karen Tweed than from any other single accordionist, albe...

Perhaps you'd like to upgrade to a lovely Poeta? Or even just add it to your collection?
It'll be nice to try it... but I very much hope that I won't be smitten with it... I've already got to find the money for two more sets of bagpipes that I've ordered!

Re: Learning multiple instruments

If you want to become a virtuoso, then you need to stick with one instrument and practice only that for hours & hours. Other than that, it's a question of personality - I need my different instruments for different purposes. I also plateau or get frustrated on one, and relieve that by switching to o...

Re: piano to accordion

The main advantage in going from piano to piano accordion is that the familiar appearance of the keyboard gives one the confidence of 'I know how to play that'. In reality, the vertical layout and lack of touch sensitivity cancels out those advantages, in my opinion... it is so tempting to hit the k...
