FR-4X!!!

Post by blisterpeanuts » Mon Mar 27, 2017 12:45 pm

The Roland FR-4X is out. Has anyone received one of these bad boys yet?

If you have an FR-3X, is it a valuable upgrade? It looks like a better onboard amp, extra USB outlet (for recording to a memory stick), more sounds, better display, more user programmed sounds.

But no onboard battery recharging :( :( :( :( :( Why, Roland, why??? :hb :hb :hb :hb
This is the killer feature that would make me upgrade. Oh, well. If you're upgrading to digital, the FR-4X is the obvious choice, clearly an improvement over the 3. But such an annoying thing to leave out....

The 4x has been out for several months now. :)
There are plenty of people that have them already and several dozen videos on Youtube, mostly by Dale Mathas and Richard Noel, but several others too.

The 4x has no onboard charging because it uses standard "AA" batteries. Both a pain and a nice feature. Is the 4x a good upgrade to the 3x? Well each person has to make their own decision, but there are a LOT of nice differences and upgrades. If I owned a 3x for 3 oe more years, yes, I would seriously consider it. If my 3x was less than a year old, nope, I'd wait.

I still prefer my 8x and the only thing that the 4x has that I wish the 8x had was the live editor. Pretty pathetic that Roland's flagship is missing such an important tool. {}

I had an opportunity to play an FR-4x at the National Accordion Association convention a couple of weeks ago. It is quite nice and they have streamlined the accessibility of going from acoustic to orchestral to organ sounds with just the touch of a button. I learned from a reliable source that there are user programs that can be loaded in that greatly enhance the onboard sounds. I currently own an FR-1x which is okay for my needs. I really prefer an acoustic accordion for my music needs, but the Roland is really fun. Steve Albini gave a stunning performance on his FR-4x during the Saturday evening concert.

If you are brave and know how to solder, I'm pretty sure an on-board charging jack can be added to the 4x. The cost is about $2 and about 30 minutes.

I did it to an FR-3b, FR-2b, and FR-1xb.

No External charge no problem fr4x. I just ordered another battery holder from Roland. $25. Maybe get the same on Amazon for 1/2 the price? But why risk if it doesn't fit. Have the second pack ready to go with 10 fresh batteries.
I like the eveready rechargeables.

Want to see and improvement in playing time? Buy PowerEx 2700mAh batteries, and to have them properly charged, use a MAHA 8 battery charger in slow charge mode. Used properly, this will guarantee you at least 3-5 years of battery life and increased playing times and reliability. :)

Sounds like I will try them. I have been using the Energizer power plus. 2300mah. For my wireless mic and MIDI jet, no problems. Sounds like the 2700 mah will give more playing time on 4x. Would it be better to find a 10 bay charge so you can charge the accordion batteries in one set? I know they are a harder to find?

My accordion retailer (Liberty Bellows in Philadelphia) sold me a second battery holder for $30 + $8 shipping.

It would be better if that battery holder could be attached to a charger as is, rather than have to take out each battery and place into the NiMH charger. For a while, there was a Chinese vendor selling a rechargeable battery pack for the FR3X, but they seem to have quit.

This thread discusses an inexpensive but attractive solution by resident experts Jim D and Landro.

With these parts you can make your own packs or just use the charger without removing the AA's from the Roland battery holder.

Cool - thanks for the links!
Do these battery packs actually fit inside an FR-3X?
