Re: Italian accordion

Hi Dan,

The buying and selling of accordions can be a minefield for the uninitiated. Some people place unrealistically high prices on instruments which have no real value, based only on some erroneous notion.

Good Luck,

Stephen.

Re: Silent Night

Hi Roy,

I solved that problem when I bought a table-top music stand for £9 ($12). It is still in perfect working order.

I enjoyed your rendition of Silent Night.

Kind Regards,

Stephen.

Re: Les bicyclettes de Belsize

Hi Phil,

I think the second one sounded better, though there was nothing wrong with either of them. Perhaps the second instrument was a little more mellow.

Hope that helps, but you haven't said why you are doing the comparison.

Kind Regards,

Stephen.

Re: Unknown family accordeon

Hi Danyboy, You will realise, of course, that the details you have furnished are insufficient for the purpose of identifying your Grandfather's accordion. Though I feel sure that you are honest and trustworthy, I doubt that any of our members would give out their private email addresses to someone t...

Re: Date of Hohner manufacture move?

Hi Tom, I'm afraid that the internal bits of the accordion remain a mystery to me. Well, I do have an idea of the principle parts, but nothing much beyond that. Having spent a couple of years building up from a 12 Bass to a 120 Bass, I have slammed into reverse gear and gone back to playing the 12 B...

Re: Badge Identification

Hello Adman,

It looks very neat and tidy, but beyond that I have no idea. The instrument appears to have only two reeds, which puts it in the "student" category.

Perhaps some more photographs would help to determine what it is.

Have you seen any other markings on the case?

Good Luck,

Stephen.

(Q) If you drop a banjo and an accordion from the 10th floor of a building, which would hit the ground first?

(A) Who cares?

Re: Date of Hohner manufacture move?

Hello Tom, Brenda & I have both worked very hard for all that we have. We also made reasonable provision for our dotage, the benefits of which we can now enjoy. My Grandma used to say: "there are no pockets in shrouds", the implications of which are obvious. Our kids have done very nicely for themse...

Re: Date of Hohner manufacture move?

Hello Tom, Please believe me, I wasn't taking you to task over any of your comments. On the contrary, I found your contribution wholly relevant to the conversation. My only intention was to state my opinion that Chinese instruments are far better than some people give them credit for. As for their s...

Re: Do you like your accordion(s)?

Hi Tom, Thank you for your interest, Tom. Joe is a very elderly man, who is physically feeble and profoundly deaf. It is difficult to know how much of a conversation Joe actually retains, but I did say that I would see him next week. His description of the instrument was so vague as to be worthless....

Re: Date of Hohner manufacture move?

Dear Tom & Tony, You both make excellent points, and I am always pleased to read your contributions. What we all need to remember (including me) is that we represent only our own views, and that the needs and aspirations of others may diverge sharply from our own. I speak a couple of languages (thou...

Re: Do you like your accordion(s)?

Hi Tom, None of my three accordions are 100% perfect ............. then again, neither am I. Maybe I love them because they are quite old and have seen better days. A very elderly gentleman who has recently joined our family history group tells me that he has an accordion. When I asked him about the...

Re: Date of Hohner manufacture move?

Hi Tony, The Chinese have built a highly sophisticated railway, with trains that exceed 217 mph. Pearl River (who make a range of accordions) are the biggest musical instrument manufacturer in the world, and they make three models of the Steinway & Son piano. They also make pianos for Yamaha. I gues...

Re: Date of Hohner manufacture move?

Hi Tom, I am the wrong age for making long term investments, so won't be stocking up on Italian accordions. Anyway, I really couldn't be sure whether or not they were actually made in Italy. And that is the fly in the ointment; firms which lead customers to believe that which is later found to be un...

Re: Date of Hohner manufacture move?

Hi Paul,

I bow to your superior knowledge, but still have nagging doubts about the soundness of Italian manufacturers. The realist in me recognises a trend, and that trend points firmly in the direction of China.

Kind Regards,

Stephen.

Re: Date of Hohner manufacture move?

Hi Paul, Country of manufacture is often misrepresented. This creates distrust and plain confusion. I don't know which Italian makers are on the level, or which have accordions or their constituent parts made in China. This confusion causes doubt in my mind, especially as I have seen shipping manife...

Re: Date of Hohner manufacture move?

Hi Phil, Though not limited to the accordion industry, misleading information is nevertheless prevalent in this industry. It is little wonder that people don't know who to trust, as it is often the case that purchasers have been totally hoodwinked by grossly misleading claims by manufacturers. I can...
