Re: Best "late for work" excuse

Let me make it unanimous............ I wouldn't join the job today, not for a solid gold, diamond encrusted pig. I think that when you have had enough of something, you have had enough. As the years roll by, and you notice things are getting worse, it is time to hang up your spurs. It was my good fo...

Re: Best "late for work" excuse

Hi Sally, I have attended over 400 post-mortem examinations, none of which have bothered me very much. The only one which really upset me was a three or four month old baby girl. It was just coincidence, but my youngest daughter was born on the same day as this little girl, and that undid me a bit. ...

Re: Best "late for work" excuse

Hi John, You obviously know about my voluntary work for Armed Forces Veterans, as we have discussed it many times. I can't remember if I ever mentioned Brad, who served with 13 Demi Battalion of the Foreign Legion. Brad lost a number of comrades in Iraq & Afghanistan, and was seriously wounded himse...

Re: Complete beginner from UK, Leicester!

Yangle,

Yes, they are a bit loud to the uninitiated. Hohner's tend to be particularly loud on the bass side, but I can live with that.

There are lots of sweet sounding instruments out there; it is just a question of finding the right one for you.

Good Luck,

Stephen.

Re: Best "late for work" excuse

Hi John, The Army, as we have already established, is a bit different to the Navy. When I left my mates behind, the wrench was almost unbearable. We had our bad times, of course, but we stuck together through thick and thin. I am still in touch with lads I served with 53 years ago, though they are a...

Re: Best "late for work" excuse

Hi John, Yeah, it's now a fact that Police Officers are on trial just for doing their job. It was getting like that a few years before I retired, but I think it has gotten much worse since. My Mate, Teddy, had a real propensity for sleeping with married women in the sub-division. He had been caught ...

Re: Best "late for work" excuse

Hidden paperwork !!!!! On my last shift before I retired, I was asked to get rid of all my outstanding paperwork. At about 02.00 hrs, I was discovered shredding my paperwork in the DAU (divisional admin unit). This was not quite what the guy who told me to get rid of it meant, but it was the inferen...

Re: Best "late for work" excuse

Denis was a coward, of that there is no doubt. Whenever there was a large scale disturbance in a pub or club, Denis could often be seen driving in the opposite direction or parked in a side street. He also had an alarming propensity for dropping his colleagues in the cart by inadvertently/purposely ...

Re: Scandalli questions

Hello Tina,

This may not be of much help to you, but your accordion looks like a nice instrument.

I have no idea of its value, but I think you should keep it anyway. You never know, you may just enjoy learning to play the accordion.

Kind Regards,

Stephen.

Re: Best "late for work" excuse

Hi Sally, Thank you for the advice. I had a look at self-publishing, but it was altogether too involved for me. The costs are prohibitive, after which it is necessary to hawk the thing around book clubs and the smaller, independent book shops. Some call this "vanity publishing" which does have a rin...

Re: Complete beginner from UK, Leicester!

Hello Again, I have heard only good things about Hobgoblin, and I'm sure they will be able to help and advise you. My own preference is PA, which are well catered for in the UK. As others have already told you, the CBA system is a little rarer here, though it does have its loyal supporters. You seem...

Re: Best "late for work" excuse

Hi Sally, I have written a novel, but have been unable to get it published. It is 66,000 words, and took me over a year to write. It is not autobiographical, though it does contain well disguised but true accounts of policing and crime. The characters are an amalgam of people I have worked with, tho...

Re: Heavy Accordion

Hi Hugh,

I'm with Jerry and Thomas on this. Gravity will always win in the end, so you may just as well accept your limitations and sit yourself down.

I never play standing but, then again, I am an old man. Come to think of it, I have never really played whilst standing.

Kind Regards,

Stephen.

Re: Complete beginner from UK, Leicester!

Welcome, I admire your determination to start on a large instrument, but would not advise that course of action to any beginner. Others may well advise you differently, but I would recommend a 72 Bass to begin your journey into the World of accordions. The 72 Bass has sufficient musical range for a ...

Re: Best "late for work" excuse

I once had a real dummy up at the Magistrates Court, and he was absolutely banged to rights. His Mother demanded an opportunity to question me in the witness box, and the bench decided to humour her. Her attempts to emulate Perry Mason were let down by the fact that she was as dumb as a brick, but s...

Re: Accordion Color

Hi Tony, You may wish to refer to my thread "never a bad colour" which may have been a little before you joined the forum. Some agreed with me (but some didn't) that a brightly coloured accordion could be a welcome change from the ubiquitous Black or Pearl Red models. I once saw a 96 Bass Pearl Rive...

Re: Best "late for work" excuse

Hi Guys, I loved court, as it gave me the opportunity to sneak up on the defence brief's blind side. In the old days, we didn't always have prosecuting lawyers, and experienced officers would be called upon to prosecute. I'm sure that you both had annual appraisals, and am equally sure that they wou...

Re: Best "late for work" excuse

Hi Sally & John, You will both be aware of the procedure regarding duty solicitors, and the occasional abuse of that system. I will not be specific in any way, but ask you to imagine a scenario in which a prisoner has asked for the duty solicitor. Shortly after this request, a very smart and well dr...

Re: Where can I get a back pad/ bellows protector?

Dear Inflammo, This subject (or a very similar one) has been discussed before, though no precise conclusion was arrived at. My bellows loosen and then remove the buttons from my shirts, at the same time snagging chest hair in a most uncomfortable way. I am far too coy to mention ladies' attributes, ...

Re: Best "late for work" excuse

Hi Sally, Amen to that !!!! I (mostly) enjoyed my service, despite the inevitable clashes with certain senior colleagues. I'm afraid that my temperament would not suit modern policing methods, as I would most certainly revert to old fashioned (but well proven) methods of controlling thugs. It now ap...
