Re: Kids these days!

It seems to be mostly people my own age who hold the accordion in contempt. Here, at least, “kids these days” think accordion is quite cool. The reactions I get from younger people are always positive. Friends brought their grand-daughter to lunch the other day, and she learns piano but had never se...

That's terrible news, and way too young for Bernard.

I have one of his melodeons, beautifully made and a pleasure to play.

Re: is this book any good?

I have the book. It's okay. It doesn't contain any magic secrets that make long jumps any easier, unfortunately. (It is written using the more modern, 4-3 fingering method.) Jeff has it right. There's nothing wrong with the book, which I have, it's basically a set of progressive exercises to practi...

Re: Straps- leather vs velvet?

The velvet padded straps on new Scandallis are very, very comfortable. I don't think I would mind all leather either, but the thick velvet padding is extremely comfortable for either sitting or standing.

G'day Jameson,
Welcome to the forum. There are a couple other of us Aussies here. Congrats on your new accordion - not too many things more exciting than getting a new instrument.
cheers Howie

Re: Hi, new here from South Australia

Hi Dingo, Scandallis sound lovely to me. That's just as well since over here at least, it's one of the only brands available to buy a range of, aside from numbers of (often over-priced) second hand accordions. I live in Central Victoria, I moved over here in the early 80's to get work and never move...

Re: Hi, new here from South Australia

Hello Dingo, Welcome to the forum! I was passing through your part of SA a few days ago. I was born in SA but moved inter-state early in life. I envy your collection - I have only two, a Scandalli PA and a B.Loffet diatonic. But, I can only play one at a time, so I have no complaints :) Murray Bridg...

Re: Learning multiple instruments

That said, I do believe that every musician is entitled to dabble on other instruments. It's so much fun. Yes! And that is what it comes down to for me. Music should be fun - it can be liberating to pick up another instrument, knowing that you aren't intending to master it, but just enjoy making mu...

It's funny that three of us in a row turn up with shaft drive motorcycles - that aren't BMWs.
You can add a fourth shaft drive motorcycle rider to the list - BMW R1200 GSA.

To stay on topic - my accordion is black :)

Re: quick question

I'm not sure if by asking about the bass pattern you're asking about the chords, but the rhythm of the left hand is easy to hear. The feel of a piece is up to the player of course, but I prefer the more bouncy, swinging rhythm for this piece, which works well with 6/8. The second video is more strai...

Re: practicing leaps in LH

I've been learning La Mangave. At the end of the day am I right in assuming there is no silver bullet and it's just practice? It's a great tune, I've been struggling with it too. I agree there's no substitute for repeated practice, there are some left hand leaps that I struggle with - and yet some ...

Me too. I don't know about any cures, except that some things will increase the ringing.

Regarding living with it, the only real thing I know is that it bugs me most if I concentrate on it. Hard as it sounds, ignoring it and trying not to focus on it, provides me with the most relief.

Re: Why have 120 bass keys when you need only 72?

I can't think of many accasions when on a 120 bass accordion either the very top two rows or the very bottom two rows might be needed to avoid huge jumps and so a 96 bass yes OK but a 120 bass.............. The key here is to change the original question to "Why have 120 bass keys when I need only ...
